The Best AI Design Tool Shouldn't Design for You

The goal of AI design should not be to remove you from the process. It should help you see more possibilities, make better decisions, and stay in control of your space.

There is a tempting idea behind a lot of AI products: if the technology becomes smart enough, the user should have to do less. For some tasks, that makes perfect sense.

Your home is different.

Designing a room is not simply a problem to be solved. It is a collection of personal decisions. What feels comfortable. What you want to preserve. What you are tired of seeing. Which materials you are drawn to. Whether you want the space to feel warmer, calmer, lighter, richer, simpler, or something you cannot quite put into words yet.

You can see it in the way people actually search, too. The common asks are not "design my room for me." They are "what app can help me design my room" and "how to use AI to decorate my house." People are not asking to be replaced. They are asking for help.

That is why we do not think the goal of AI interior design should be to design your room for you. The goal should be to help you make better design decisions for yourself.

You do not always start with a clear vision

Sometimes you know exactly what you want. You might want darker cabinets, a warmer wall color, and a different pendant light above the dining table. In that case, AI should help you make those changes precisely.

But sometimes your starting point is much less specific. You know the room feels unfinished. You know something is wrong. You might know that you want it to feel more inviting, but you do not yet know what changes would create that feeling.

Traditional design software often expects you to arrive with the answer. Choose a style. Enter a prompt. Pick from a predefined list.

But taste does not always work like that. Often, you recognize what you want before you know how to describe it.

Better AI should create better decisions

We think this distinction matters. An AI model can generate an impressive image very quickly. But an impressive image is not necessarily a useful design decision.

Maybe it replaced the flooring you wanted to keep. Maybe it changed the room layout even though the layout already worked. Maybe it chose a style that looks good in isolation but does not feel like you.

The image can be beautiful and still be wrong.

This is why we think the quality of an AI design product should not be measured only by the quality of its generations. It should also be measured by how much control it gives the user over the path to the result.

• Can you explore different directions?
• Can you refine something without starting over?
• Can you preserve the parts you already love?
• Can you compare one version against another?
• Can you go back when you realize an earlier idea was better?
• Can you Branch from a previous version and explore another path?

Those questions matter because creative decisions are rarely linear.

Sometimes the most intelligent thing AI can do is preserve

Generative AI is very good at changing things. But good design tools also need to know when not to change something.

You can explore a completely different mood without committing to it. You can see an idea, react to it, change part of it, compare it with an earlier version, and keep exploring.

That is powerful. But the power should stay with the person making the decision.

At Idori, we do not want to build an AI that tells everyone what their homes should look like. We want to build tools that help people understand what they want their homes to look like.
